The Salaam Muslim Cemetery in Nkoowe is now completely full, according to the Uganda Muslim Welfare Association (UMWA). UMWA, which oversees the cemetery, has announced that no more graves can be accommodated at the 8-acre cemetery yard designed for adults. The last eight available grave spaces are expected to be filled this week. UMWA is calling on the Muslim community to explore options for acquiring a new burial space.
The Salaam Muslim Cemetery was established 15 years ago by the late businessman Hajji Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige of the BMK group, who was also laid to rest there. While it was initiated by BMK, he generously offered it to the Muslim community, especially those who lacked burial spaces or preferred to be buried there.
During a recent visit to the cemetery, Wakiso District Kadhi Erias Kigozi confirmed its full capacity but mentioned that space for juvenile burials is still available. He encouraged families who have lost children to continue using the cemetery for their needs.
Kigozi stated, “From the situation on the ground, I would like to inform our Muslim community in this area that we no longer have burial space for adults but there is still space for children. I want to encourage all of us to come together and find a new land. I also take this opportunity to thank the BMK family for this land that has now reached its full capacity, including its maintenance.”
Reports indicate that approximately seven deceased individuals are laid to rest at this cemetery daily.
