Opposition Appeals to Inter-religious Council Regarding Abductions

Tuesday, January 23, 2024

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, has called on the Inter-religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) to address concerns related to state-sponsored abductions and injustices. The opposition, united under the banner of the United Force of Change, faces mounting pressure from the families of abductees seeking information about the whereabouts of their loved ones.

Championing Core Values

On Monday, Mr Ssenyonyi highlighted the seven core values of the IRCU, including justice, urging the council to utilize its influential platform to address the prevailing injustices in the country. He emphasized that speaking out against such issues, including politically motivated murders, disappearances, and prolonged incarcerations without trial, would make a meaningful impact.

A Plea for Equality

Mr Ssenyonyi stated, “There are Ugandans who were murdered through the political process, and justice has not been served. There are Ugandans who are missing; when they speak out, it makes a difference. We request the religious leaders to speak out about these issues and also against poor service delivery because they are also Ugandans.”

Religious Leaders’ Response

Responding to the opposition’s plea, the Church of Uganda Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu emphasized the role of religious leaders in ensuring equal attention to all Ugandans. Archbishop Kaziimba stated that churches and mosques consist of people from different political parties, and their responsibility is to speak for the welfare of all citizens. He urged caution in public criticisms, emphasizing that sometimes private conversations are more effective.

Maintaining Peace Amid Advocacy

While acknowledging the opposition’s concerns, Archbishop Kaziimba urged opposition leaders to advocate for a better Uganda while maintaining peace. He highlighted the importance of peaceful dialogue and private engagements, emphasizing that attacking someone publicly may not always be the most effective approach.
