Gulu, Uganda – The Deputy RDC Gulu Cosmas James Okidi successfully resolved a land dispute that threatened to derail multibillion-shilling government projects in the district. Mr. Okidi’s intervention on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, saved key initiatives like the Paicho Kal Growers Cooperative Society’s grain cleaning machine, maize Haller from NARO, and sunflower seeds from NAADs.
The cooperative, empowered by the government-donated machine in April 2022, faced a critical hurdle when a neighboring family member, identified as Ogik Tabo Patrick, refused to allow power lines to pass through his compound, hindering the machine’s operation. This standoff jeopardized not just the cooperative’s livelihood but also the potential of the projects to benefit the entire Acholi subregion and beyond.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Mr. Okidi stepped in to mediate between the parties. Through skillful negotiation and a commitment to finding common ground, he successfully resolved the dispute amicably, leaving both sides with “smiling faces,” as the Deputy RDC himself described.
“I am happy that we have been able to resolve this issue peacefully,” Mr. Okidi stated. “This paves the way for the immediate installation of the power line and the launch of the cooperative’s operations.” He further emphasized the immense potential of these projects, saying, “They will serve not only the Paicho Kal community but also the entire Acholi subregion and beyond, driving economic growth and improving livelihoods.”
Mr. Okidi’s swift action and commitment to finding solutions earned him praise from the community and stakeholders. The successful resolution of the land dispute is a testament to his leadership and dedication to development in Gulu district.
