BUIKWE DISTRICT, UGANDA – A Gateway Bus Company vehicle overturned early Monday morning on the Katosi–Nyenga Road, resulting in one fatality and injuries to four passengers. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM on July 21, 2025, in Katovu, Ngongwe.
The Scania bus, registered as UA 354AN, was traveling from Kampala to Soroti via the Katosi route when the accident happened. Preliminary police investigations indicate that a front tire burst caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus then veered off the road and overturned onto its right side.
Tragically, the driver died instantly at the scene. Four passengers sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Nkonkonjeru Health Centre and Kawolo Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The body of the deceased driver has been taken to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
SP Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the incident. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the importance of vehicle safety.
“This tragic loss could possibly have been prevented. We continue to urge all motorists to carry out regular maintenance checks and adhere to road safety regulations at all times to avoid such unfortunate incidents,” stated SP Kananura, emphasizing the need for motorists to prioritize routine vehicle inspections.
