The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has announced the release of the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results. The data reveals an increase in candidates scoring Division 1, indicating an improvement in performance compared to previous years. Notably, there was a decrease in the number of candidates failing the examination, with 329,939 learners, constituting 95.9% of those who sat for the exams, eligible to progress to the Post-UCE level.

Out of the total candidates, 64,782 individuals, equivalent to 17.9%, achieved a Division 1 pass. This marks an increase from the previous year’s figure of 13.5%, which accounted for 46,667 candidates.

In 2023, a total of 364,469 candidates registered for the UCE examination, with 49.5% being male and 50.5% female. Of these registered candidates, 361,695 (279,032 males and 182,63 females) actually appeared for the examination.

Noteworthy is the performance discrepancy between male and female candidates. While females outperformed males in the English language, males demonstrated better performance in other subjects, particularly in History, Geography, sciences, and commerce.

These results mark the conclusion of the examination cycle under the old curriculum. The Ministry of Education is poised to unveil a strategy for transitioning from lower secondary to upper secondary education, aligning with the new competence-based curriculum.

Further details regarding the results are expected to be provided.
