Call for Applications: Biomedical Engineering PhD Fellowships (Cohort 3) at Makerere University

The Biomedical Engineering Unit at Makerere University, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, invites applications for PhD fellowships under the SIGHT program. This initiative, funded by the U.S. NIH – Fogarty International Center (Award Number D43-TW012260), aims to enhance capacity in medical technology innovation by providing graduate-level training in Biomedical Engineering (BME) to Ugandan researchers.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Junior or mid-level researcher/scientist affiliated with Makerere University.
  2. Possession of a prior master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field.
  3. Ability to articulate a clear research problem.
  4. Project idea related to chronic movement disorders; research interest in this area is encouraged.
  5. Commitment to developing a productive career in Uganda.
  6. Demonstrated training and experience in biomedical engineering or adjacent fields.
  7. Willingness to undertake and complete all training mandated by the BME program at Case Western Reserve University.
  8. Commitment to publishing research conducted under this training in open-access peer-reviewed journals.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated interest in doctoral research training and conducting research.
  2. Interest in Medical Devices and Technology Research and Innovation.
  3. Project idea focusing on an area related to chronic movement disorders.
  4. A plan for career development aligning with Uganda’s BME research needs.
  5. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure:

  1. Submit a single PDF document to [email protected] with a copy to [email protected].
  2. Subject of the email should be “PhD Scholarship Application 2023.”
  3. Include a cover letter (1 page), a resume (not exceeding 3 pages), a personal statement (1 page), transcripts and certificates (BSc and MSc), a PhD research concept (maximum 2 pages), and two letters of recommendation (sent separately by the referees to [email protected]).

Timeline:

  • Application Deadline: January 16th, 2024
  • Interviews: January 19th, 2024
  • Notification Date: January 22nd, 2024
