CPA Institute Uganda Launches Masterclass to Improve Student Performance

Tuesday, January 9, 2024

The Certified Public Accountants Institute in Uganda is launching a masterclass for tuition providers, focusing on pedagogy and other incentives. The move aims to address the challenges identified during the release of November 2023 examination results, including low grades and concerns about the quality of teaching.

John Bosco Ntagaare, the Director of Education, emphasized the need for qualified teachers, especially in accounting courses. The masterclass will provide tuition providers with skills and effective teaching methods to improve student understanding and performance in challenging subjects.

The decision to introduce the masterclass follows research into the reasons behind low grades, with a key complaint being inadequate teaching methods. The initiative targets all teachers, regardless of their educational background, including those with Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD), Certified Tax Advisor (CTA), and Certified Public Accountants (CPA) qualifications.

In addition to the masterclass, the Institute plans to establish a modular performance audit course, in collaboration with the Office of the Auditor General (OAG). This course aims to enhance the organizational capabilities of Supreme Audit Institutions for greater impact in their jurisdictions.

To further support student learning, the Institute encourages the purchase of subsidized study materials and attendance at free webinars. Students are also advised to seek tuition from recognized providers for improved performance.

The Institute’s Vice President, CPA Ronald Mutumba, highlighted the importance of professional experience alongside academic excellence, emphasizing the holistic approach to becoming a proficient accountant. The early release of exam results aims to provide students with ample time for preparation for upcoming examinations.

In a related development, the Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) course has been transferred to the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) from January 1, 2024. The Institute will continue to conduct examinations for current ATD students until 2025, with UBTEB restructuring the course to fit its modular system.

The graduation for the 6,223 candidates of 2023 is scheduled for March 7, 2024, with exam results revealing that females performed better than males in most fields, except in Certified Tax Advisor, which is dominated by more males than females.
