The Government has announced the allocation of at least 1,911 scholarships for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for the current year, marking a significant investment in vocational and technical education across the country. These scholarships are distributed among 27 TVET institutions, covering various regions to ensure widespread access to vocational training.

In Kampala, the capital city, students have the opportunity to apply for scholarships at three designated TVET institutions. Jinja district, with two institutions, has been allocated the highest number of scholarships, totaling 84. The scholarships are divided between Kakira Community Technical Institute (43) and Jinja Vocational Training Institute (41), highlighting the district’s pivotal role in vocational education. Other districts, including Kayunga, Luwero, Kakumiro, and Butambala, among others, each host at least one institution where scholarships will be available, ensuring a broad geographic coverage.

Gomba district follows Jinja in terms of scholarship allocations, with 48 scholarships available at St. Peters Bukalagi Technical Institute. Additionally, districts like Kakumiro and Mayuge each have been allocated 43 scholarships, with Wakiso and Kiboga closely behind, each offering 42 scholarship slots. This distribution underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing technical and vocational skills across the country.

For students who are unable to secure these scholarships, there is an alternative path through private sponsorship, with a staggering 86,694 slots available across the 27 government-affiliated institutions. This ensures that a significant number of students will have the opportunity to pursue TVET training, regardless of their scholarship status.

The education ministry has also adjusted its selection process to accommodate students affected by the delayed release of the Uganda Certificate Education (UCE) results for 2023. An extended selection exercise has been announced, allowing 2023 UCE leavers to apply for TVET courses. Applicants are required to submit their TVET application forms along with necessary documents to any public TVET institution by February 23, 2024. Application forms are readily available at public TVET institutions, education offices, and online on the Ministry of Education and Sports’ official websites.

The selection process is scheduled for February 26 and 27, 2024, and will take place in several locations across the country, ensuring accessibility for applicants from all regions. This approach not only facilitates the application process but also aligns with the TVET Policy 2019’s objectives. The policy emphasizes the importance of technical skills for individual self-reliance, enterprise growth, and national economic development. It targets all Ugandans in need of employment skills, focusing on the creation of employable skills and competencies relevant to the national labor market.
