National Teachers College Kabale faces a critical issue as dilapidated halls of residence, roofed with condemned asbestos sheets, pose a threat to student safety. Some students have been compelled to seek accommodation off-campus due to the hazardous conditions.

The college principal, Ms Annet Komunda, highlights the urgency of the situation, citing health risks and challenges during rainy seasons. The administration appeals to the government and partners for approximately Shs3.7b to rehabilitate seven halls of residence, including the removal of the condemned asbestos sheets.

Despite receiving Shs9.4b for partial rehabilitation in 2019, specifically for the pedagogy department, extra funds are required for the students’ halls and staff quarters. The Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and other partners have been informed, with the college awaiting their response.

Ms Komunda expresses concerns about students opting for off-campus accommodation, causing inconvenience and posing security threats. The college, with 980 students pursuing diplomas, plans to elevate to a degree-awarding institution under the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE) starting in July.

Health experts warn of the dangers of asbestos exposure, leading to lung cancer, larynx cancer, ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and respiratory issues. The accumulation of asbestos fibers in the lungs over time can result in serious health problems.
