Makerere University is advocating for an increase in funding from the Ugandan government, aiming for a total of Shs60 billion in an effort to boost research and innovation capabilities. Currently, the institution receives approximately Shs30 billion for research and innovation, a figure deemed insufficient by Makerere authorities.

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, emphasized the need for additional financial support to enhance the university’s capacity to generate innovations that contribute to the nation’s economy. Prof Nawangwe highlighted the university’s commitment to research and the potential for increased impact with more substantial funding.

During a showcase of innovative projects, where Makerere University presented over 24 initiatives related to food security, technology, healthcare, environment, and mental health, Prof Nawangwe expressed optimism about the university’s trajectory in research. He suggested that with doubled funding, Makerere could significantly increase the number of innovators and innovations, contributing further to national development.

Leader of the visiting delegation, Maurice Kibalya, a lawmaker representing Bugabula South County, conveyed confidence in the government’s continued support for research and innovation funding at Makerere University. Kibalya encouraged the university administration to strive for international recognition in the research landscape.

In June 2023, Makerere University announced a strategic shift towards becoming a research-led institution, gradually reducing undergraduate admissions. The focus on research aligns with the university’s vision to make significant contributions to knowledge creation and societal development.

The call for increased funding comes at a time when Makerere University seeks to elevate its research capabilities, positioning itself as a hub for innovation and academic excellence. The 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), hosted by Uganda, concluded with India confirmed as the host for the 28th CSPOC gathering in early 2026.
