Tragedy struck God Cares Primary School in Kirinnya Zone, Lukaya Town Council in the early hours of Friday, February 23, 2024,  as a fierce fire engulfed a girls’ dormitory, causing extensive damage to property worth millions of shillings. The inferno, which broke out around 4:30 am, caught the learners unaware as they slumbered peacefully, only to be jolted awake by the vigilant matron who promptly sounded the alarm, allowing them to evacuate the burning structure.

Authorities in Kalungu District have launched an investigation into the cause of the devastating fire, which left the dormitory in ruins and consumed valuable belongings belonging to the pupils. Beddings, books, clothes, utensils, and other personal effects were all tragically lost in the blaze, leaving the affected students grappling with the harsh reality of their sudden displacement and loss.

Remarkably, despite the intensity of the fire, all 31 pupils residing in the dormitory escaped unharmed, thanks to the swift actions of the alert matron and the timely response of the community. Mr. Paul Kaakira, a concerned neighbor, recounted how the piercing sound of the matron’s alarm roused them from sleep, prompting an immediate mobilization to aid in the firefighting efforts and assist in evacuating the students to safety.

Ms. Maria Emma Matovu Kusemererwa, the school’s head teacher, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the police, school staff, and neighboring community members in averting potential casualties. While the exact cause of the inferno remains shrouded in mystery, Ms. Kusemererwa acknowledged the swift response that prevented loss of life, albeit at the cost of significant property damage.

Southern Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr. Twaha Kasirye, reiterated the importance of fire prevention measures in educational institutions, emphasizing the need for adequate smoke detectors and firefighting equipment. Urging school proprietors to prioritize fire safety, Mr. Kasirye underscored the crucial role of quick intervention in mitigating the impact of such disasters, as evidenced by the collaborative efforts that prevented further escalation of the tragedy.

The incident marks the first school fire reported in the region since the commencement of the new academic term on February 5. However, it serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding the lives and property of students and staff within educational facilities. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, stakeholders remain committed to implementing robust fire safety measures to prevent future tragedies and ensure the well-being of the learning community.
