Members of Parliament (MPs) have agreed to the Ministry of Education’s request for an additional 100 Billion Shillings to be added to the ministry’s budget. This allocation aims to rehabilitate 200 primary schools throughout the country. Each school’s renovation is estimated to cost Shs500Mn.

During parliamentary sessions, it was highlighted that nearly 40% of primary school buildings under government administration are in a state of disrepair. This situation poses risks to the lives of pupils as they attend classes in these deteriorating structures.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education has expressed a need for Shs29.304Bn to support and facilitate the Secondary School Games. However, only Shs6Bn has been allocated in the Ministry’s national budget for the fiscal year 2024/25.

The decision to allocate additional funds for school rehabilitation underscores the urgency of addressing the deteriorating infrastructure in primary schools across the nation. By earmarking S100 Billion Shillings for this purpose, Parliament aims to improve the learning environment and ensure the safety of students attending these schools.

Furthermore, the request for increased funding to support the Secondary School Games reflects the importance of extracurricular activities in the holistic development of students. Adequate financial support is crucial to organize and conduct these sporting events, which contribute to students’ physical health and overall well-being.
