The Government has started a new process to re-register all private technical and vocational education training (TVET) institutions in the country. This effort aims to raise standards in the TVET sector and ensure that graduates are well-prepared for the job market.

Loy Muhwezi, the Commissioner of TVET Operations and Management at the Ministry of Education and Sports, explained that all TVET institutions are being evaluated in collaboration with industry experts. Institutions that meet the required standards will be registered, while those that do not will be given up to 12 months to make necessary improvements.

Currently, participation in the registration process is voluntary. However, institutions that choose not to participate may face consequences, including potential closure.

Muhwezi shared this information during a feedback workshop attended by representatives from 72 private TVET institutions. The workshop took place on Wednesday at Ntinda Vocational Institute in Kampala. The goal of the event was to identify the challenges these institutions face and find ways to help them comply with existing regulations.

She emphasized that following the implementation of the new TVET policy, all institutions were required to reapply for reassessment to ensure quality education. Seventy-two institutions applied and, in collaboration with industry professionals, they were assessed to verify the courses they offer.

“The government’s main objective is to ensure that Ugandans trained at these institutions are relevant and prepared for the job market, contributing to social and economic development,” Muhwezi stated.

At the end of the registration process, institutions that meet the standards will receive certificates, and the list of accredited institutions will be published in the media. This measure aims to prevent the public from enrolling in unrecognized institutions.

“This kind of registration has already been implemented at the primary, secondary, and university levels,” Muhwezi noted. “Now, it is TVET’s turn to undergo this important process.”
