Makerere University, alongside six other African Institutions and two German counterparts, has secured support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the Research Networks for Health Innovations in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISSA). The African One Health Network for Disease Prevention (ADAPT) project, a crucial facet of this initiative, aims to foster One Health Research and Capacity Building for the sustainable stewardship of Antimicrobials. This involves comprehensive training through Post-doctoral, PhD, and MSc programs, coupled with capacity-building workshops.
Seeking Emerging Scholars
Makerere University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Biosecurity is actively recruiting candidates for one PhD and two Masters positions under the ADAPT project. The selected fellows will play pivotal roles in various research and capacity-building work packages. Individuals aspiring to contribute to the One Health cause and possess a high motivation for postgraduate studies are encouraged to apply. The positions are full-time, with successful applicants expected to fully commit for the duration of the fellowship. Financial support will cover tuition, research expenses, and stipends, with the fellowship lasting 24 months for MSc and 48 months for PhD candidates.
PhD Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the PhD fellowship, applicants must have a good first degree in Veterinary Medicine or Biomedical Laboratory Technology from a recognized university. Additionally, a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Veterinary Medicine, Microbiology, or Animal Health is required. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of working in multidisciplinary teams with backgrounds in animal, human, and environmental sciences. Proficiency in molecular laboratory diagnosis, gene sequencing and analysis, and related bioinformatics competences is essential. Applicants should have at least one published paper or a manuscript draft in advanced stages, showcasing their capacity to write scientific articles. Moreover, applicants must not exceed 45 years of age.
Masters Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
Prospective Masters fellows should possess an honours degree or equivalent in Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Laboratory Technology, or Animal Production from a recognized university. Admission to programs with a strong linkage to One Health is crucial for eligibility.
Selection Criteria for Both Fellowships
The selection process will be based on academic ability, communication skills, passion for graduate studies, a well-crafted concept note for the PhD, and the relevance of training to current work or future career goals. Commitment to full-time study is also a key factor.
