The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations in Kalangala have commenced without significant issues, except for the absence of two students from Bishop Dunstan Nsubuga SSS. Out of the 25 students registered for the exams, comprising 22 girls and 23 boys, only 23 students appeared for the first paper.
The missing students, whose identities have been withheld, include a male and a female student. Muhammad Mulema, the Director of Studies at Bishop Dunstan Nsubuga SSS, explained that the school had lost track of these two students earlier in the term. Subsequently, it was discovered that they were dealing with undisclosed personal issues.
Mulema elaborated, “The male student had family responsibilities that weighed heavily on him and ultimately disrupted his education.”
Transportation of examination papers to island schools in Kalangala was reported to be smooth. Cathy Kabasoke, the UCE supervisor in Kalangala, expressed satisfaction with the organized management of the exams. The examination papers reached Kalangala on a Sunday at 2:00 PM. Furthermore, papers for Bukasa Secondary School on the islands were transported the previous day by 5:00 PM to ensure that adverse weather conditions, such as rain or heavy waves, did not disrupt the schedule.
In total, there are 153 students taking the UCE exams in Kalangala this year, distributed across three secondary schools: Bishop Dunstan Nsubuga SSS, Sserwanga Lwanga Memorial SSS, and Bukasa Secondary School. Comparing this year’s numbers to the previous year, there has been a slight decrease in the number of students taking the exams. In 2022, the three schools had 87 boys and 79 girls sitting the UCE exams. This year, there are 86 boys and 67 girls.
