Uganda’s Minister of Education, Janet Kataha Museveni, is set to inaugurate the construction of a modern Ministry of Education headquarters, which will cost approximately UGX 63.9 billion. This new development is designed to centralize all the departments under the Ministry of Education, eliminating the need for annual rental expenses.
The twin towers, to be built adjacent to Kyambogo Primary School near Kabaka’s palace in Kyambogo, will comprise two towers, one with eight floors and the other with ten floors. Additionally, the complex will feature a 600 seat auditorium and two parking decks.
The financing for this project comes from a government loan provided by the Islamic Development Bank. The construction, which is already in preparation with land grading and marking, is expected to be completed within two years from the date of commissioning.
Once finished, the new headquarters will house more than 700 staff, reducing the Ministry’s reliance on rented offices, a financial burden highlighted by the Auditor General in previous reports. In the past fiscal year, the Ministry of Education spent approximately UGX 5 billion on staff rentals.
The move is part of a larger government effort to reduce rental expenses, with other ministries and agencies also slated to move to permanent offices. This is aimed at not only saving government funds but also improving coordination among different departments.
