President Yoweri Museveni has officially granted YMCA Comprehensive Institute (YCI) charter status, as confirmed by Dr. James Nkata, the institution’s chancellor. This significant development validates the institution’s dedication to providing high-quality education focused on practical skills, according to Dr. Herbert Mukasa, the principal of YCI.

The process leading to this achievement involved various activities, according to Nkata, who expressed gratitude for the President’s decision. Addressing journalists at YMCA Wandegeya Campus in Kampala on February 20, 2024, Nkata emphasized the importance of this milestone for the education sector.

The acquisition of a university charter underscores YMCA Comprehensive Institute’s leadership in vocational and technical education. This recognition serves as an example for other institutions offering degrees, highlighting the importance of their efforts and achievements.

Prof. Mary Okwakol, the executive director of the National Council of Higher Education, conveyed the approval in a letter addressed to the institute’s vice-chancellor. The letter, dated January 29, 2024, accompanied a copy of the President’s letter granting the charter, signed on January 11, 2024.

Dr. Mukasa reiterated that this development validates the institution’s commitment to delivering quality, skill-based education. He emphasized the dedication of both staff and students to providing education that equips individuals with the necessary skills for success in today’s job market.

Roselyne Birungi, chairperson of the YCI governing council, expressed motivation to further elevate standards and expand opportunities for future generations. This achievement serves as inspiration to continue empowering youth and vulnerable groups through education.

YMCA Comprehensive Institute, established in 1986 by the Uganda Young Men’s Christian Association, has grown to become a recognized institution offering over 30 NCHE-accredited vocational and technical courses. With campuses in Kampala and Wakiso district, YCI remains committed to its mission of imparting practical skills to empower the youth and vulnerable populations.
