President Museveni expressed concern over wetland degradation in the Busoga Sub-region during a visit to Bugweri District. He pledged to complete unfinished projects initiated by the late Ali Kirunda Kivejinja and highlighted the construction of Bugweri District’s administration block. He mentioned plans to involve the UPDF engineering brigade for this project. Museveni emphasized the need to sensitize communities about the misuse of water bodies.
During his visit, Museveni also paid tribute to Kivejinja and criticized the irrational use of resources, citing rice cultivation in wetlands. He warned against the adverse effects of wetland degradation on the global climate. The president promised to return to Busoga to raise awareness about preserving water bodies.
Defense Minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja urged Museveni to address various issues affecting the region’s poor, including providing loans to the fishing community for proper gear and banning illegal fishing equipment imports. He also highlighted land grabbing issues in Jinja City.
First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga advocated for introducing mineralogy courses in universities within Busoga and stationing geology officers in the region. Chief of Defense Forces General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi emphasized the importance of dreaming of leadership without destabilizing the country’s peace.
Tarehe Sita, observed annually on February 6, commemorates the beginning of a guerrilla war in 1981 that led Museveni to Uganda’s leadership.
