In Agu and Abuket wetlands, situated at the border between Ngora and Serere districts in the Teso sub-region, a growing concern has emerged among local leaders. They are troubled by the increasing presence of herdsmen, often referred to as Balaalo, and their cattle.

Simon Peter Edoru Ekuu, the Chairperson of Soroti LCV, voices his apprehension over the movement of Balaalo herdsmen. He notes that their actions pose significant challenges to various parts of the region, as they appear reluctant to cooperate with the authorities.

Meanwhile, Mike Odongo L’Asio, the Chairperson of Ngora LCV, expresses his worry over the lack of reported entry of the herdsmen into the district. He fears that the influx of large cattle numbers could potentially spread diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, which already plagues some districts in the region.

Recent reports from Ngora reveal that over 2,000 cattle have entered the district within the past fortnight. Additionally, another group of herdsmen has invaded Serere district with more than 600 cattle, exacerbating concerns.

Dr. Collins Amonya, the Principal Veterinary Officer of Serere, highlights that Abuket already accommodates 34 kraals owned by Balaalo herdsmen who have resided in the area for years. Abuket wetland presently hosts over 11,000 cattle sourced from various parts of Uganda.

Following a meeting with herdsmen in Abuket wetland, leaders unanimously decide against accommodating any more Balaalo herdsmen in the area due to saturation.

The surge in herdsmen activities has compelled individuals to erect settlements on the wetland, compounding the environmental degradation caused by human activities like charcoal burning, rice cultivation, and other agricultural practices.

Stephen Ochola, the Chairperson of Serere LCV, announces plans for enhanced security surveillance in the area. This measure aims to monitor and regulate the movement of animals into the wetland, mitigating further encroachment.
