FDC Averts Crisis, Appoints Yusuf Nsibambi as Party Whip

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) National Delegates Conference has chosen Mr. Yusuf Nsibambi, a Member of Parliament from Mawokota South, as their new party whip. This decision is pending approval by parliament. In August 2023, the party had removed Mr. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the Kira Municipality MP, from the position of the party Chief Whip in Parliament.

Mr. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the party’s Secretary General, has disclosed that the party was on the brink of de-registration if they failed to hold National Executive Committee (NEC) elections by the current date.

Speaking about the appointment of Honorable Yusuf Nsibambi as the FDC whip in parliament, Nandala stated, “When I wrote to the Speaker of Parliament to appoint Honorable Yusuf Nsibambi as whip for FDC under the law, some members led by MP Mwijukye convinced the Speaker and said the appointment of Yusuf had not been done by the National Delegates Conference, so today I have got an opportunity to ask NEC to approve Honorable Yusuf Nsibambi to represent FDC as the whip in parliament.”

The FDC Katonga faction had attempted to prevent the polls through various legal challenges, all of which were ultimately dismissed by High Court Judge Musa Ssekaana.

Mafabi, while delivering a brief update on the party’s affairs at the ongoing delegates’ conference in Lugogo, emphasized that failing to conduct the elections would result in a leadership crisis within the party.
