Preparations are in high gear as the 1st parliamentary sitting kicks off in Gulu at Kaunda Ground.
Several members of parliament from Northern Uganda welcomed the 1st Regional Parliamentary sitting in Gulu as they interacted with members of the press in Gulu City.
MP Fr. Charles Onen, of Pece Laroo Division, confirmed to The Ankole Times newspaper that the level of poverty in Northern Uganda should be one of the key issues debated and addressed.
He added that the rate of poverty in Northern Uganda is at 70 percent, elaborating that the issue needs extensive discussion. He lamented that corruption in Uganda has reached a critical point and should be tackled by the Ugandan parliament, among other issues of national importance.
MP Moses Ogwal Goli, MP for Dokolo North, said in an interview with our reporter from Gulu City that bringing the 1st Parliamentary sitting to Northern Uganda will allow them to elaborate fully on real issues and concerns in the region.
Otuke East MP, Hon. Julius Acon Bua, narrated that there are also other important issues that need to be discussed, but according to him, the specific topics will be based on the order paper. He nevertheless suggested that the issues of infrastructure, schools, health centers, and agriculture are key for the development of Northern Uganda, especially in the Lango sub-region.
Many MPs have been seen arriving in Gulu since Tuesday evening to attend the 1st Regional Parliamentary sitting.
However, flyers bearing the images of Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Among, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and Hon. Fr. Charles Onen, an MP of Gulu City, have been placed at Kaunda Ground.
Parliament staff members were already at the venue by Tuesday evening, and security patrols were also seen along major streets of Gulu.
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is expected to attend the parliamentary sitting at any time, and security deployment has been beefed up.
