Four Drown in River Nile as Boat Capsizes

Locals and police in Kamdini, Oyam District, are searching for four people who went missing after a canoe capsized while crossing from Oyam to Kiryandongo on November 24, 2024.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Sebastiano Ojok, aged 58, a resident of Diicunyi village, Kamdini Sub County in Oyam District
  • Hassan Muhammad, aged 43, a resident of Kololo village, in Kiryandongo District
  • Agenonga Stephen, aged 36, a resident of Nanda Game Village, Laboke Parish, Nyamahasa Sub County in Kiryandongo District
  • David Ocira alias Museveni, aged 36, a resident of Kololo Village, Kiryandongo District

It is alleged that on Sunday at around 9:30 AM, Ojok, a resident of Diicunyi village, Kamdini sub-county, used a boat belonging to Opii Morris of Diicunyi landing site to ferry three passengers to Awoo landing site in Kiryandongo District.

However, the canoe capsized while crossing the River Nile, resulting in the drowning of all occupants.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, stated that a search operation was conducted on Monday but yielded no results.

According to the 2023 annual crime report, 243 people died, and 323 were rescued in water-related accidents.
