This morning’s plenary session of the Uganda Parliament commenced with Speaker Anitah Among presiding. Among the agenda items, Speaker Among took a moment to congratulate Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of the Opposition, on his graduation from the Law Development Centre. The House then observed a solemn moment of silence to honor the late Kenyan Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Francis Omondi, and other army officers who tragically perished in a plane crash.
During the session, Speaker Among encouraged Members of Parliament (MPs) to participate in the upcoming Walk against Malaria scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024. The walk, themed “Zero Malaria starts with you,” aims to raise awareness about malaria prevention and control. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa will serve as the chief guest at the event. However, the Speaker also urged the Ministry of Health to consider organizing similar walks in regions with high malaria prevalence to enhance sensitization efforts in vulnerable communities.
Shifting focus to legislative matters, the House deliberated on the Registration of Persons (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The bill proposes transferring the responsibility of administering civil registration laws, including those pertaining to child welfare and marriage, to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). By consolidating civil registration functions under one agency, the bill aims to streamline processes, reduce government expenditure, and enhance administrative efficiency.
After thorough consideration, the House passed the Registration of Persons (Amendment) Bill, 2024, at the Third Reading stage.
