The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) reported to Parliament that as of January 31, 2024, various Government ministries, departments, and agencies owe the corporation approximately sh81.4 billion in outstanding water bills. Among these, sh15.8 billion pertains to bills from government hospitals.

On February 7, 2024, NWSC executives presented a detailed list of national and regional referral hospitals with outstanding water bills to the Parliament Health Committee, chaired by Dr. Charles Ayume.

NWSC emphasized that any government institution exceeding the approved threshold for domestic arrears, as set by the Ministry of Finance, would face immediate disconnection. This action follows unsuccessful attempts to comply with directives from the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury to prioritize water bills as the first expense from quarterly releases consistently.
