First Lady and Education Minister Janet Museveni has expressed the need for assistance to help the Rwenzori sub-region recover from long-standing challenges. She noted that the region has faced difficulties such as ADF attacks, floods, landslides, and civil unrest, which have adversely affected access to essential services like education and economic empowerment programs.
Speaking in Kasese District, Minister Museveni emphasized the importance of affirmative action to support the entire sub-region as it strives to overcome these setbacks. Her remarks were delivered by Primary Health Care Minister Margaret Muhanga during the fifth graduation ceremony of Kagando School of Nursing and Midwifery.
In a related statement, Minister Muhanga extended the government’s condolences to the families who lost loved ones in a suspected ADF rebel attack on Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Secondary School in June, which resulted in the deaths of 44 individuals. She described the attack as a heartless act and assured that the government is committed to securing the country’s borders and eliminating destabilizing elements.
During the graduation ceremony, a total of 1,140 graduates received certificates and diplomas in nursing, midwifery, medical theatre techniques, and medical laboratory technology. These qualifications were conferred by Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU).
Addressing the graduates, Mrs. Museveni encouraged them to make a positive impact in society, emphasizing the values articulated in their nurse’s anthem. She reminded them that they were chosen by God to serve and love while providing professional care.
South Rwenzori Diocese Bishop Nason Baluku also challenged healthcare workers nationwide to carry out their duties with integrity. He stressed the importance of aligning one’s private and public life and highlighted that integrity builds trust, peace, and influence.
During the event, a total of Shs82 million, which included a Shs20 million contribution from the First Lady, was collected for the construction of a library at the institution.
