State House Entebbe to Host National Prayer Breakfast

Parliament will hold the National Prayer Breakfast on October 8, 2023, at State House Entebbe. The event’s theme is “Fear not, repent, and serve the Lord,” as announced by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa.

Tayebwa emphasized that the prayer breakfast is open to all Members of Parliament, regardless of their political affiliations. He explained, “The purpose of the prayer breakfast is to strengthen bonds with the faithful nationwide and seek God’s guidance in our service to the people.”

However, some legislators expressed concerns about the choice of venue, suggesting that it might deter opposition members from attending. Hon. Michael Timuzigu (NRM, Kajara County) stated, “Due to COVID-19, we’ve been hosting the National Prayer Breakfast at State House. However, to promote inclusivity, I request that the venue be changed to Kololo ceremonial grounds.”

The Chief Opposition Whip, Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, argued that holding the prayer breakfast at State House does not make it a truly national and unifying platform.

Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, questioned the necessity of mandatory COVID-19 tests when meeting the President at State House, comparing it to requirements elsewhere. He said, “People need to understand the connection between State House, the Presidency, and COVID-19. Why is a COVID test necessary only for State House visits?”

In response, State Minister for Primary Healthcare, Hon. Margaret Muhanga, stressed that COVID-19 still poses a risk, with the Ministry of Health reporting 50-60 cases per week. Muhanga explained that the ministry’s Scientific Committee advised mandatory COVID testing for anyone meeting the President to ensure his safety. Deputy Speaker Tayebwa directed the minister to provide an update on COVID-19.
