President Yoweri Museveni is slated to inaugurate the National Population and Housing Census 2024 at Kololo Independence Grounds on Wednesday, December 12, 2013 in a significant move for comprehensive planning and evidence-based decision-making. This census, a vital source of demographic data in Uganda, follows the last exercise conducted in 2013, which recorded a population of 42 million people.
Dr. Chris Mukiza, the executive director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), highlighted the census’s importance in providing essential statistical data for the Parish Development Model (PDM), measurement of National Development Plan III (NDP III) outcomes, and the development of NDP IV. The data will be particularly relevant for shaping strategies related to subsistence agriculture, with nearly 64% of the working population engaged in this sector.
The outcomes of the 2024 census will play a crucial role in shaping the next National Development Plan, aligning with the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, and informing various development strategies. To ensure effective coordination, the government has established the National Census Council (NCC), comprising 13 Cabinet Ministers, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors at UBOS. The NCC, housed within the Office of the Prime Minister, will guide and coordinate the Census 2024 activities.
