Government Faces Criticism Over Delayed Iron Sheet Distribution to Reformed Warriors in Karamoja

Sunday, January 14, 2024

Local leaders and reformed Karamojong warriors in the Moroto district express frustration over the delayed distribution of iron sheets promised by the government. The iron sheets, intended for housing construction, were flagged off by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja in November 2023. The first phase of distribution, covering 97,552 iron sheets for 3,752 beneficiaries across nine Karamoja districts, was expected before Christmas. However, the iron sheets are still stored in district facilities.

Reformed warriors voice their disappointment, emphasizing their need for the iron sheets, especially since they surrendered their guns as part of the peace process. William Achia, a reformed warrior, had planned to construct his house and start a small business but now faces challenges due to the delayed distribution. He urges the government to expedite the process, believing it could encourage more warriors to return home.

Emuria Amudany, another reformed warrior, blames local leaders for failing to advocate for timely distribution. He claims that leaders seem to have distanced themselves from the program after the weapons were surrendered. LCIII Chairperson John Robert Adupa reports that reformed warriors are pressuring leaders for the iron sheets, creating tension.

Stephanie Adupa, an LCV female councilor, emphasizes the importance of the Karamojong community embracing peace and focusing on development. However, she notes concerns about the unclear selection criteria, which could lead to insecurity.

Paul Lokol, the LCV Chairperson of Nabilatuk, expresses concern that the delivered iron sheets may not cover everyone, causing dissatisfaction among beneficiaries. The district Chief Administrative Officer, Alex Chelimo, confirms the receipt of 9,568 iron sheets for 368 beneficiaries. He attributes the delay to a lack of funds, revealing that only half of the promised amount has been received.
