Abirebe explained the decision to engage the UPDF Engineering Brigade for the construction. "The UPDF offered the lowest rates and consistently delivers quality work on time. If we had gone through the entire procurement process, the project could have cost around UGX 4 billion. We are grateful to President Yoweri Museveni for allowing the UPDF to implement some local government projects," he said.

Mbarara – The Nyakayojo Health Center III in Mbarara is set to receive a major upgrade, thanks to a UGX 2.4 billion investment aimed at transforming the facility into a Health Center IV. This ambitious three-phase project will see the construction of a three-storeyed building equipped with a state-of-the-art theatre, treatment rooms, and office space.

During the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Mbarara city leaders officially launched the construction, which will be undertaken by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade. The first phase, focusing on the ground floor, will cost UGX 982 million and is expected to be completed in just four months.

Assy Abirebe, the town clerk of Mbarara city, highlighted the project’s significance. “Once completed, the health center will be elevated to Health Center IV status, enabling it to perform operations, especially for pregnant mothers. This upgrade will help reduce the burden on Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and Mbarara City Health Center IV,” Abirebe explained.

The health center will also see the addition of two doctors to manage the new theatre and ensure its efficient operation.
