Mbarara City, Uganda – Igara West Member of Parliament, Louis Mbwatekamwa Gaffa, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Mbarara City mayoral seat as an independent candidate.
This announcement follows his failure to secure the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket during the recently concluded primaries.
Speaking to the media, Mbwatekamwa expressed disappointment with the internal handling of the primaries, describing the process as unfair and marred by party politics. “I was denied a fair chance, but my commitment to serve the people remains strong,” he stated.
Despite the setback, Mbwatekamwa said his decision to shift focus from Parliament to local leadership is not a downgrade but a strategic move to have a more direct impact on people’s lives. “This is a step forward, not back. Mbarara City deserves accountable and people-centered leadership,” he said.
If elected, Mbwatekamwa pledged to prioritize sanitation, healthcare, education, and sports development. He emphasized a leadership style grounded in transparency, inclusivity, and service delivery.
The announcement has stirred debate and excitement among residents and political observers in Mbarara. Many see his entry as a potential game-changer in the mayoral race, given his strong grassroots support and legislative experience.
Responding to criticism over his frequent shifts in political constituencies, Mbwatekamwa defended his decision, stating that as a Ugandan and registered voter, he has the constitutional right to contest for any public office across the country.
He also criticized internal weaknesses within the NRM, accusing some members of tarnishing the party’s image and undermining democratic principles.
Mbwatekamwa called on his supporters to remain focused and to vote based on values and vision rather than party allegiance. “Mbarara needs leaders who prioritize the people, not party colors,” he said.
With his declaration, the Mbarara City mayoral race is expected to draw national attention as more candidates prepare to contest ahead of the 2026 general elections.
