A Global Bus was involved in a fatal road accident along the Masaka-Kampala Highway on Monday morning, killing one person and injuring several others.
The bus, registration number UBB 985M, lost control due to slippery road conditions caused by heavy rain. The accident happened at Kyekurura, shortly after Kinoni center in Lwengo District, part of Greater Masaka.
The driver of the bus was killed in the accident. One other person sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby health center. Several other passengers were also injured but their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Local authorities responded swiftly to the accident, transporting the injured to nearby health centers.
“We caution all drivers on slippery roads during this rainy season to avoid over speeding to prevent such accidents,” said SP Kasirye Twaha, the Lwengo District Police Commander.
“We are still investigating the cause of the accident, but it is likely that the driver lost control due to the slippery road conditions,” he added.
The death toll from the accident is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search the wreckage of the bus.
