Kabale District Speaker Raises Alarm Over Poor Hygiene, Describes District as “A Bush”

Hon. Flavia Kanagizi Nyinakiiza , Kabale District Local Government Speaker

The Kabale District Speaker, Hon. Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagyizi, has raised concerns about the increasing dirtiness in the district, stating that it no longer looks like a district, but rather resembles a bush.

Speaking during a council session, Hon. Nyinakiiza Kanagyizi expressed her disappointment, highlighting that the district has become a dumping ground where trash is disposed of without regard.

She further stated that the situation was particularly embarrassing when they hosted a delegation from the Kigezi sub-region who were preparing for the presidential visit, especially due to the overgrown grass in the area.

The Speaker pointed out that the issue of cleanliness is not limited to the District Council Hall but extends to the District Education Officer’s office block, where she has even had to participate in cleaning, despite there being staff members designated to handle such tasks.

She challenged the Clerk to the Council to warn all users of the council hall to bring their own dustbins, as they often leave the place dirty after meetings.

She expressed frustration that her repeated complaints about the cleanliness issue, particularly regarding the office attendants, have fallen on deaf ears, with the responsible authorities failing to act.

She shared that she often had to personally clean her office, and when the smell from the toilets worsens, she resorts to pouring water herself, as though the district lacks office attendants.

As leaders, she emphasized the need for teamwork, adding that if the situation doesn’t improve, she and the Clerk to the Council might have no choice but to lock all the district buildings, restricting access to the toilets except for themselves.

In a final statement, Hon. Nyinakiiza Kanagyizi made it clear that although she was elected as the Speaker, she was not chosen to be a cleaner. “You can call me a spitting cobra, a puff adder, or a python, but these names only make me stronger and more determined to deliver,” she concluded.
