Locals from Kaharo sub-county, Kabale District, have voiced concern over the escalating criminality in the area, attributing it to the alleged practice of police releasing suspects before they reach their homes.

Speaking on Friday, July 5, 2024, during a piggery distribution event in Nyakasharara and Burambira parishes, Kaharo sub-county, residents, led by John Kabagambe, chairperson of Omukisamba Village in Burambira Parish, lamented that the high level of criminality is undermining community development projects.

The pigs, donated by Hon. Ndamira, were intended to support local farmers but have instead become targets for theft.

Kabagambe noted that the most commonly stolen items are pigs, goats, rabbits, hens, and beans, especially during the harvesting season. He attributed this to unemployed youth who prefer criminal activities over work.

Edmandi Tumwesigye, the Kaharo sub-county LC3 Chairperson, expressed concern about the impact of criminality on the progress of the Parish Development Model (PDM). He revealed that beneficiaries who had purchased cattle through the program had their animals stolen.

Tumwesigye also mentioned two recent suspects who were initially arrested for assault but later released, prompting residents to keep their animals inside their homes at night, which poses a threat to their safety.

The Kabale District Woman MP urged the community to establish robust bylaws to curb criminality and pledged to address the issue with relevant authorities to find a solution.
