Dr. Simon Ichumar Omeke, the District Health Officer of Katakwi District, has died following a tragic road accident that occurred on the Soroti–Moroto highway.
The fatal incident happened on Tuesday night as Dr. Ichumar was traveling from Soroti back to Katakwi in a government vehicle, registration number UG 6670M. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle overturned at Akakai, a stretch along the Soroti–Moroto road.
Eyewitnesses say the car lost control before rolling several times, although the exact cause of the accident has not yet been established.
Dr. Ichumar, who was behind the wheel at the time, died as a result of the crash. Two other occupants in the vehicle sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with health and security officials expected to release more details in due course.
The death of Dr. Ichumar is a significant loss to the health sector in Katakwi District, where he played a key role in overseeing public health services.
