Katakwi Voters Reject VP’s Unopposed Nomination

The Ankole Times

Katakwi voters and leaders have opposed a recent attempt by a group to make the incumbent woman MP of Katakwi District, Vice President Jessica Alupo, an unopposed candidate in the upcoming election.

According to Katakwi RDC Godfrey Katamba, the launch of Alupo’s unopposed candidacy was scheduled for November. However, the situation remains uncertain following the intervention of Cecilia Anyakoit, a former MP who is now challenging Alupo for the seat.

Local residents like Odeke John welcomed Anyakoit’s return and urged the current leaders to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Oturi road connecting Toroma and Ngariam counties. Poor road conditions have led to the deaths of several people.

John Robert Ogwang, a former speaker of Ngariam sub-county, along with other local leaders, expressed support for Anyakoit, claiming that her victory in 2021 was overturned by political interference. They viewed her candidacy as a positive development for the district.

District councillors Margret Imalingat and Sarah Amuge highlighted concerns about the state of service delivery in Katakwi, despite the public’s apparent silence on the issue.

While visiting Toroma and Ngariam counties, Cecilia Anyakoit called for calm among the electorate, describing the upcoming election as more intriguing than the 2011 contest.
