Kisoro District joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Refugee Day with a colorful ceremony at Nyakabande Refugee Transit Centre. It was revealed that the camp received over 90,000 asylum seekers and refugees in the past two years, with 6,500 arriving in 2024.

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme “Solidarity with Refugees.” Ogwang Jimmy, the UNHCR team leader in Kisoro, emphasized the importance of education, urging refugees to educate their children as a means of empowerment.

He highlighted that World Refugee Day is about celebrating refugees’ strengths and achievements, and showing solidarity. “Seeking refuge is not a choice but the only option for many to survive, find peace, and keep their dreams alive,” he said.

Daniel Kisaamo, the settlement commandant in the Office of the Prime Minister’s Department of Refugees at Nyakabande Transit Camp, disclosed that Uganda has been able to welcome a large number of refugees due to its security and good leadership. He encouraged refugees to form organizations to get support from NGOs and requested international community support to alleviate the burden on Uganda’s social services. He also emphasized the importance of educating children for their future.

Meanwhile, the Kisoro District Chief Administrative Officer, Hajji Badru Mayanja, assured that the government is ready to support the refugees until conflicts in their countries are resolved.

Security Concerns in Kisoro District Affecting Tourism

Security in Kisoro District is crucial for combating tourism threats. Today, key stakeholders, including hotel owners, met at the Kisoro District Council Hall to address escalating criminality targeting the tourism industry.

The Kigezi Tourism Association Chairperson, Gerald Nkusi, highlighted the problems faced by hotel owners due to inadequate security in the area. He pointed out the challenges posed by Kisoro’s location at two international borders and forested areas within Uganda.

Louis Bishubeho Turyagyenda, the chairperson for the tourism committee in the Kisoro District Council, criticized the role played by security personnel, particularly the tourism police deployed in rural areas. He noted that those deployed in his sub-county, Kirundo, often neglect their duties and become involved in community disputes.

Responding to these concerns, the Kisoro District Resident District Commissioner, Badru Sebyalu, advised hotel owners to focus on constructive steps forward rather than blame games. He urged politicians to present their concerns in their respective sessions and assured that the security team would address any loopholes.

J. Omona, the commandant of the 35th battalion in Kisoro District, stated that the army is alert and ready to counter any serious threats. She cautioned hotel managers to maintain their vigilance and cooperation.

The Kisoro District Police Commander, SSP Banerd Mugerwa, called for increased cooperation between security agencies and all tourism stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the district.
