Kisoro Municipality mayor, Richard Ndyana, has been nominated as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for the Kisoro District LC5 chairperson race. He was declared the winner on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. by the Kisoro District NRM registrar, Tadeo Mujambere.
Ndyana secured a total of 45,343 votes, representing 64.6% of the total vote, defeating his opponent, Bazanye Milton Mutabazi, who garnered 24,796 votes (35.4%). The primary elections were held on Thursday, with the final tallying concluding on Friday.
Ndyana expressed his belief that the leadership skills he has used in his other positions will be instrumental in the development of Kisoro District.
Meanwhile, the Kisoro District NRM mayoral and LCV councilor primaries saw a mix of unopposed victories and tightly contested races. Registrar Tadeo Mujambere announced that the elections introduced both new faces and a few incumbents who successfully retained their roles.
Unopposed Candidates
Several candidates secured their positions without opposition, demonstrating strong community support. They include:
- Nsingize Verah: Female Councilor for Southern Division.
- Nsenga Denis: Male Councilor for Nkuringo Town Council.
- Tumwesigye Merab Winnie: Female Councilor for Kirundo and Rubuguru Town Councils.
- Musimenta Benandete: Female Councilor for Nyundo Sub-County.
Contested Races
In fiercely contested races, some incumbents retained their seats while others were ousted by determined newcomers.
- Nyarusiza Sub-County: Mutuzo Joyce emerged victorious as Female Councilor, defeating incumbent Annette Sebasigari. Mfitumukiza John clinched the Male Councilor seat, defeating Ndayambaje Samuel.
- Nyakinama Sub-County: Sanvura Richard dominated the Male Councilor race, defeating incumbent Ndayisaba Emmanuel. Mahoro Flavia secured the Female Councilor position, ousting incumbent Nakato Diana.
- Chahi Sub-County: Incumbent Kazimiri Wilson retained his seat as Male Councilor, overcoming challenges from Tumushime Shafat and Bigezo Valence. Uwimana Speciazo won the Female Councilor race for Chahi Sub-County and Chanika Town Council, defeating two other candidates.
- Kanaba Sub-County: Incumbent Ntabanuye Emmanuel retained the Male Councilor seat, defeating Mugenga Bernard. Kansime Annette Mbonye won the Female Councilor race for Nyakabande and Kanaba sub-counties, defeating Uwimana Rebecca.
- Bunagana Town Council: Kagyiraneza Yeremia secured the Male Councilor seat with 949 votes, narrowly defeating Niyonshuti Vian, who garnered 843 votes.
- Nyundo Sub-County: Hakizimana Aloise won the Male Councilor position, beating three other candidates.
- Muramba Sub-County: Incumbent Male Councilor Hakizimana Martin held onto his seat, defeating Nzitatira James. Niringiye Mary also retained her position as Female Councilor for Muramba Sub-County and Bunagana Town Council.
- Rukundo Town Council: Mutezi Calistus Nsenga unseated incumbent Bahizi Flugence to become Male Councilor.
- Chanika Town Council: Incumbent Nizeyimana Valence retained his Male Councilor seat, defeating Njoroge Vianey.
- Busanza Sub-County: Gato Tarsis defeated incumbent Joroam Hagabimana for Male Councilor, while Nyiraguhirwa Pamela retained her seat as Female Councilor for Busanza Sub-County and Mupaka Town Council.
- Nyarubuye Sub-County: Brian Zirimabagabo was declared Male Councilor. Kampire Felister won the Female Councilor race, defeating incumbent Nyiraziboneye Margaret and Dusabe Phionah for Nyarubuye Sub-County and Rukundo Town Council.
- Bukimbiri Sub-County and Nyanamo Town Council: Akampurira Jane emerged victorious in the Female Councilor race, defeating Kamusiime Juliet.
- Murora Sub-County: Munyabuntu Kenneth ousted incumbent Irankunda Innocent Kagenza for Male Councilor.
- Kisoro Municipality, Central Division: Habyara Stephen defeated Habumugisha Osbert for Male Councilor, while Gorret Nzabonimpa secured the Female Councilor position for Central and Northern Divisions.
- Northern Division: Mfitumukiza Bernard Kamari won the Male Councilor race.
- Southern Division: Agaba James retained his seat as Male Councilor.
