Okidi Patrick, Oyam – The Paramount Chief (Wonyaci-elect) of the Lango Cultural Foundation, His Highness Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, spent last week with the people of Abok Sub-County, Oyam District, in a memorial prayer for those killed by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) on June 8, 2004.

In his speech, His Highness Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune expressed his sincere, heartfelt condolences to the families of the 28 people who were brutally murdered by the LRA rebels. He also congratulated the political leaders of Abok Sub-County and especially the religious leaders for organizing such a memorial prayer annually, appreciating everyone’s efforts.

He requested the government of Uganda to compensate those who died at the hands of the LRA while in IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps in the Lango sub-region. He cited those who died in Abok, Barlonyo, Abia, and many other places in the Lango sub-region. He emphasized that they should be compensated because the government did not take care of them when they were in the IDP camps.

He added that the Lango Cultural Foundation will unite with the leadership of Abok Sub-County to build a memorial site. This site will serve as a place for visitors and tourists, generating revenue for Abok Sub-County.

His Highness Eng. Okune left Abok and proceeded to the home of the late Ambassador/Awitong of Mua-Otiratok clan, Col. Rtd. Richard Okello Mwaka, in Iceme, Oyam District.

The Oyam LCV Chairman, Hon. Benson Dila Oyuku, congratulated Wonyaci-elect Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune for attending the memorial prayer in person. The clan head (Awitong) of Mua-Otiratok, Mr. Sam Ogwang Aluny, commended Wonyaci for taking his time to attend the memorial prayer, noting it was the second time the prayer was held to remember the two years since the clan head’s passing.

Wonyaci Eng. M.M. Okune called for unity among all his subjects, emphasizing that no one will divide the people of Lango under his leadership. Dr. Eng. Moses Okune will be consecrated on November 2, 2024, as the Paramount Chief of the Lango Cultural Foundation. Thousands of people from all over Uganda, various cultural kingdoms within Uganda, and others from the diaspora will attend the event.
