On Thursday afternoon, the Minister of Health, who also doubles as Lira City Woman MP, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, empowered several groups in Lira City, including areas formerly covered by Adyel Division, to the tune of over 74 million shillings.
This initiative is part of her efforts in areas carved from the former Adyel Division located in Lira City. A total of 880 group members are receiving 500,000 shillings each as non-refundable money meant for poverty eradication in Lira City, as part of her own initiative.
This funding comes from her savings accumulated from part of her salary and constituency allowance received monthly from Parliament.
Gombola Lira also received 69 million UGX under the same arrangement on Wednesday.
Dr. Aceng congratulated the “Women in Action” group under The Great Salvation Ministry Church in Kakoge C, Lira City West Division, headed by Mrs. Eunice Arwai. The group started income-generating activities with 500,000 UGX and now has millions of shillings in their bank account. The Minister noted that the current beneficiaries, who registered back in 2020, are being prioritized, while others will be assisted at a later date.
She encouraged members who have not yet registered with groups to do so to benefit from her empowerment initiative. Dr. Aceng cautioned those who use social media and radio stations to insult the women involved to have moral values and to desist from such behavior, as it is uncalled for.
Dr. Aceng emphasized that no one should deceive the people of Lira into thinking that what she lobbies for the city is government property. She explained that such resources do not reach Lira City without someone lobbying for them, and therefore, people should appreciate the efforts rather than criticize them negatively on social media.
She also announced that the Greater Lira Central area will soon receive her donation of 500,000 shillings per group.
