Lira City Mourns the Passing of Mayor Ogwal Achonga

The Mayor of Lira City West Division, Michael Ogwal Achonga, passed away due to cancer at Mulago Regional Referral Hospital on Sunday. Mayor Ogwal Achonga had recently undergone surgery and was diagnosed with cancer, as reported by the organizing committee.

He died at the Mulago Cancer Institute in Kampala.




According to Ogwal’s spokesperson, he extended his congratulations to Lira City Mayor Sam Atul and Lira City Women MP, the Honorable Minister for Health, Dr. Ruth Jane Aceng Ocero, for their support and assistance to the deceased in various ways.




He passed away at 10:00 PM on the Sunday of three days ago after a prolonged illness of approximately six months.




Moses Anyii Omara, who is heading the committee for the burial of Mayor Ogwal Achonga, announced on a radio talk show that the body of Ogwal would be taken to St. Judge Catholic Church in Jinja Camp. Later, the body would be transported to Lira City Council Hall on Wednesday to allow Lira City Honorable Councilors to pay their last respects.

He was a devoted Christian admired by many in the Lira Cathedral and served as a mentor to numerous people in the entire Lango sub-region.

Anyii later stated that Mayor Ogwal Michael Achonga’s body would be taken to Aler Ward in Ngetta on Thursday, where a vigil would be held by members of the community, and the burial would take place at his home on Friday.




The secretary of the organizing committee, Mr. Opio George Rashid, has called upon local artists to liaise with the organizing committee to review the message in the song before it is aired or played publicly.

The late Achonga had a residence at Jinja Camp Trading Centre, Juba Road, adjacent to Lira Integrated Secondary School, as explained by the publicity secretary, Opio George Rashid.

Meetings for burial arrangements are scheduled at the ordination ground at 4:00 PM every day.
