Lira, Uganda – Jasper Okello, a 50-year-old specialist in mixed farming in Lira City, has come forward to testify that the four-hectare model of H.E Gen. Yoweri Museveni can work best even within urban settings. Okello, speaking from his farm during an extensive interview with our reporter Anai Ober on Friday, manages a poultry farm, keeps rabbits, goats, turkeys, guinea fowl, and runs a piggery project in a small compound.
Jasper emphasized that youths across Uganda, regardless of age, should not solely focus on academic education but rather integrate practical skills into their daily lives. He asserted that hard work pays off significantly, while cautioning against the misconception that education alone guarantees success.
“The knowledge we gain from academic education is merely theoretical; practical application is paramount for success in life,” added Jasper Okello.
He further detailed to our reporter how he earns 1.5 million shillings monthly through poultry keeping. Additionally, he mentioned he owns 14 pairs of rabbits, 10 goats, three pigs, and turkeys.
Speaking directly from his poultry farm, he advised youths against relying on begging, urging them instead to work diligently to achieve success. Okello resides in Anai Ober cell, Anai ward, Lira City West Division, Lira City, in the Lango sub-region.
During the interview, Jasper took our reporter around his hatchery and showcased a locally made incubator that automatically regulates temperature, suitable for hatching about 900-1000 eggs within the 21-day incubation period.
My minimum monthly earnings from the hatchery amount to 1.5 million shillings, as I charge 1000 shillings per egg for hatching,” stated Jasper. He currently maintains 80 parent stocks of mature chickens, despite starting with only 20 chickens in 2018. The project, now six years old, operates on a piece of land measuring 11 meters by 24 meters.
Jasper expressed his aspirations to conduct research to ensure that indigenous local chicken breeds in the Lango sub-region mature within four months. Additionally, he plans to establish a resource center within a year to employ youths and conduct research to enhance indigenous poultry breeds.
