LIRA, UGANDA — The Lira High Court has dismissed the election petition filed against Oyam South Member of Parliament, Hon. Patrick Ogwang Obura, affirming his victory and ordering the petitioner, Queen Dorothy Amolo, to pay all legal costs.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Fatima Bwanika, the court rejected claims that the Electoral Commission confused voters by listing the petitioner as “Queen Dorothy Alweny” on the ballot. The court noted that her photograph and details were clearly printed on the ballot and highlighted that she failed to verify her name during the official candidate proofreading exercise in 2021.
Defense counsel Joram Edonu confirmed the dismissal of the petition.
Welcoming the verdict, MP Ogwang Obura, who also serves as Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group, alongside Oyam NRM Chairperson Bosco Onyik Ogwal, stated that the ruling secures the constituency’s representation and allows the leadership to fully focus on driving local development.
“This ruling is a victory for the people of Oyam South. It affirms their choice and allows us to concentrate on the work that matters most — delivering development and improving livelihoods,” MP Ogwang Obura said.
The dismissal brings an end to the legal challenge that had cast uncertainty over the constituency’s representation. With the court’s decision, MP Ogwang Obura can now fully dedicate his efforts to legislative duties and local development initiatives, while also continuing his role as Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group.
The ruling has been received with relief by constituents and party leaders in Oyam, who view it as a validation of the electorate’s will and a step toward political stability in the region.
