MP Vincent Shedrick Obong Eyit has once again bolstered his political reputation in Lira City West Division by using his own salary to maintain and repair bad roads in his constituency.

On Thursday, many people gathered in Kakoge A to witness the start of road repairs scheduled for this week in the Kakoge to Omodo market area, via Orlando to the far end of Lira City.

MP Obong has captured headlines by informing his constituents that while the role of an MP does not include road construction or maintenance, he was dismayed to find that the 1 billion shillings allocated to Lira City was not properly utilized. He suspects that the funds were misused or embezzled by certain authorities within Lira City.

MP Eyit has called upon the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to take charge and conduct a thorough investigation into the 1 billion shillings road fund disbursed to Lira City, as it was not utilized for its intended purpose.

The LC1 of Kakoge A, Bloke Delkano, urged the MP to summon the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the funds earmarked for road construction. According to a boda boda rider who preferred anonymity when speaking to The Ankole Times on Thursday, the roads from Kakoge to Omodo market, Ober to Ogwal Achonga Road are in poor condition.

Addressing several residents of the area, Hon. Vincent Obong Eyit Shedrick acknowledged receiving numerous complaints about the deplorable conditions of several roads within Lira City West and decided to use his personal salary to address the issue.

Hon. James Omara Elem, Lira City’s Secretary for Finance, responded to our reporter’s inquiries on Friday afternoon, stating, “We do not fear any investigation because we are confident our hands are clean. My official comment is, he can bring whoever he wants to investigate us. He (MP Obong Eyit) is a member of the road committee and is therefore criticizing the committee to which he belongs.”

When contacted for comment, Hon. Jimmy Michael Akena Obote, Chairperson of the Road Committee for Lira City and also serving as the Lira City East Division MP, did not respond to repeated phone calls by press time.

Obong Eyit surprised voters when he personally operated a grader and commenced actual work on the Kakoge to Omodo road, Ober Road, Obutuwelo Road, among others.

Work has also commenced on a 2-kilometer murram road linking Bung ‘B’ cell and Atodi in Omito ward, ending near the health center after MP Obong flagged it off last week.

In a recent development, Lira City West Division MP Hon. Shedrick Vincent Obong Eyit flagged off work on July 3, 2024, on a 3.7 km road passing through Saving Grace Nursery and Primary School in Amuca ward via Amin-nyaa cell to Lela village.
