Pader | Uganda – The Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, Maj Gen Keith Katungyi, has officially received 30 officer cadets for a four-week internship as part of their ongoing three-year training program.
During his address at the division headquarters, Maj Gen Katungyi emphasized the core values of discipline, loyalty, integrity, and a strong work ethic as key pillars for career progression within the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
“Avoid shortcuts. Do your work diligently,” he told the cadets. “The questions that will define your future are: Is he trainable? Is he deployable? Is he loyal? Is he disciplined?”
Maj Gen Katungyi also discouraged lobbying for promotions or positions, urging the cadets to remain focused, committed, and eager to learn.
He encouraged the officer cadets to embrace self-development through continuous reading, self-training, and staying updated on historical and current military affairs.
“Self-training is the most important. Keep reading books. Read the history of the NRA and understand current trends. Aspire to be a well-rounded general duties officer,” he added.
The cadets, currently undergoing a rigorous three-year officer training program at the Uganda Military Academy, will use this one-month field internship to gain hands-on experience in operational environments under the 5th Infantry Division.
Their deployment aims to enhance their understanding of real-time command structures, community engagement, and field coordination in alignment with UPDF’s mission and values.
