Makerere University is in need of an additional two billion Ugandan Shillings to complete the Multipurpose Sports Arena. Vice-Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe mentioned that the first and second phases of construction have been successfully executed, but the project has stalled due to a lack of funds for the third and final phases.
If the required two billion shillings cannot be secured, the university plans to look for at least 600 million shillings to address plumbing, electrical work, and complete the flooring. The fundraising efforts are ongoing to gather the necessary funds to advance the construction.
The Arena construction has been ongoing for six years since it was initially constructed in a hurry by the UPDF Engineering Brigade to host the World University Games. The government allocated 5.57 billion shillings for the facility, with the UPDF Engineering Brigade overseeing construction. However, the current financial shortfall is hindering the completion of the project.
Despite facing challenges, including design changes after hosting the World University Games, the facility is expected to include a pavilion, stadium, offices, washrooms, parking lot, and access roads. The completion of Makerere Arena is crucial for improving Uganda’s sports infrastructure, providing an alternative to the MTN Indoor stadium in Lugogo.
In 2022, Uganda Netball secured the bid to host the African Netball Championship with Makerere Arena expected to be completed in 2023. However, the completion delays led to the loss of hosting rights for the championship.
