The Chief Justice of Uganda, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, has appointed Ereemye Jumire James Mawanda as the new Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Judiciary.
Mawanda, who is the Acting Registrar of Magistrates Affairs and Data Management, takes over from Justice Jamson Karemani Karemera, who was recently promoted to Judge of the High Court.
In a letter dated August 28, 2023, the Chief Justice said that Mawanda’s appointment was in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under Article 133 of the Constitution and in accordance with Section 3(a) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act.
Mawanda is a career Judicial Officer with over 27 years of experience. He has served in various capacities, including Magistrate Grade III Trainee, Magistrate Grade II, Magistrate Grade I, Chief Magistrate, Deputy Registrar and Acting Registrar.
He is also a member of the Judiciary Council representing the Lower Bench, the Law Council and the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Council. He is also a Committee Member on the Executive of the Uganda Judicial Officers Association as a representative of Registrars.
In his new role, Mawanda will be responsible for overseeing the Registry of Communications and Public Relations and will also deputize the Chief Registrar as the spokesperson of the Judiciary.
The Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu, welcomed the appointment, saying that Mawanda is a “seasoned and experienced Judicial Officer” who is “well-positioned to foster public awareness and the image of the Judiciary in line with the Judiciary Strategic Plan V.”
She also thanked Justice Karemani for the great job done as PRO of the Judiciary.
The appointment of Mawanda as the new Judiciary PRO is a significant one. It is a sign of the Chief Justice’s commitment to improving the public image of the Judiciary and to making it more accessible to the people of Uganda.
Mawanda is a well-qualified and experienced individual who is well-suited for this important role. He is a strong communicator and has a deep understanding of the Judiciary. He is also committed to transparency and accountability, which are essential qualities for a Public Relations Officer.
I am confident that Mawanda will do an excellent job as the new Judiciary PRO. He will help to improve the public image of the Judiciary and make it more accessible to the people of Uganda.
