Mbale Court Order Restricts Media Coverage of Inzu Ya Masaba Activities

Media houses across Uganda have been cautioned to adhere to a standing court order issued by the Mbale High Court restricting coverage of activities linked to the Inzu ya Masaba group.

In a statement released by the spokesperson of the Umukuka of Bugisu, Steven Masiga, journalists, investigators, and all media platforms “both national and local” were warned against reporting, recording, or promoting activities associated with the group and its affiliates.

According to the statement, the directive stems from Court Order No. 040/2025, which is currently in full force. The order bars press coverage and any form of publicity related to the group’s activities, except in cases involving arrests and prosecution of individuals found in contempt of court.

“The esteemed members of the press are reminded not to be caught off guard,” the statement reads, urging strict compliance to avoid legal consequences.

The order reportedly extends to several individuals and their agents accused of promoting the activities of the group, including persons identified as Wathiagi, Wakane, and Mrs. Wakane.

Masiga emphasized that under the Ugandan Constitution, contempt of court carries serious penalties, and media practitioners must exercise caution in their reporting.

The statement also referenced the recent government gazettement of Jude Mike Mudoma as the Umukuka of Bugisu, in accordance with constitutional provisions and the Institution of Traditional and Cultural Leaders Act, 2011.

Masiga noted that the Umukuka institution is recognized under Ugandan law as a custodian of cultural norms and traditions within the Bugisu community.

Copies of the statement were addressed to media heads, editors, reporters, and security operatives in the Elgon region.
