National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, is celebrating after top Buganda officials expressed their goodwill and blessings towards his 2026 State House ambitions.
A delegation led by former Katikkiro Owek. Joseph Mulwanyammuli Ssemwogere, Owek Dan Muliika, and Mbogo clan leader Omutaka Kayiira Gajuule visited Kyagulanyi at his home in Magere. They assured him that the Kabaka of Buganda and the wider Kingdom wished him success in his political journey.
Kyagulanyi, visibly excited, told supporters that he was now “blessed and set” to accomplish his task of unseating President Yoweri Museveni. Photos of the meeting have since sparked debate, with some in the NRM camp reportedly unsettled by the symbolic show of support from Buganda leaders, a region they had claimed was firmly behind the ruling party.
This latest development comes against a backdrop of strained relations between NUP and Buganda Kingdom officials. In the past, NUP supporters accused the Kingdom of being distant, particularly when Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga appeared neutral during political tensions. Some foot soldiers even lashed out, alleging that the Kingdom favored Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition, during his fallout with NUP leadership.
The fresh endorsement may now calm those tensions, showing a possible realignment between Buganda’s traditional leadership and the NUP camp as the 2026 elections draw closer.
