Recent media reports have been making rounds in public domain falsely implicating Capt. Mike Mukula, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, in a Shs 1.75 billion overseas job scam orchestrated by a one Christian Asiimwe, alias Don Chris, of Skypins Tours and Travel.

However, there is no credible evidence linking Capt. Mukula to this scam and he has also categorically denied knowing about it or having anything to do with it. Apparently, these allegations appear to be based on speculation and recycled conspiracy theories from his past. This is because there’s no official investigations or complaints tying him to Don Chris or Skypins or having even been allies at any point.

The tycoon has not been named by police or the Ministry of Gender, which oversees labour export licensing in Uganda.

WHO IS DON CHRIS?

It should be noted that the real scandal centers on Don Chris, who has been exposed as the mastermind behind Skypins Tours and Travel. This company is being accused of collecting billions from job seekers with fake promises of work abroad. Victims say they were lured by glossy marketing, fake documents as well as misleading assurances. After paying large sums—some as high as Shs 15 million—many were left stranded without jobs, visas, or refunds.

Besides, Skypins operated without proper licensing from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. Despite that, the agency used forged connections to influential figures to gain public trust. This tactic is what led some to drag names like Mukula’s into the mud.

Social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook were used by the fraudster, Don Chris to flaunt luxury and mock victims, further inflaming public anger. In recent videos online, he said that he had nothing to do with the company and it’s owned by bigwigs in the government. Don Chris even challenged his victims to take him to court if they have any proof that they gave him the money.

A DISTRACTION FROM THE REAL ISSUE

While public frustration is understandable, falsely linking public figures without evidence only distracts from the real criminals. Capt. Mike Mukula has not commented on the matter, likely due to the baseless nature of the accusations.

Authorities are now urged to tighten regulation, ensure all agencies are licensed, and bring scammers like Don Chris to justice—without dragging innocent people into fake headlines. State Minister of the Youths, Balaam Barugahara said that he talked to Do Chris and urged him to return and refund this money. It’s not yet clear if there are plans to extradite him from where he is-France allegedly – so that he faces the full force of the law.
