Uganda’s political scene is heating up as reports reveal that Mr. David Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and his close ally, Mr. Spartan Mukagyi, are believed to be masterminds behind the newly formed People Power Front (PPF).
Sources indicate that the two recently held a secret meeting to finalize strategic plans for PPF, sparking fresh controversy.
Although PPF was initially thought to be the brainchild of Mukagyi, insiders now claim that Rubongoya has been the real force behind its formation.
The creation of PPF is seen as a backup plan to safeguard NUP amid the party’s mounting challenges, especially legal battles initiated by the Kibalama faction.
This faction has long contested NUP’s leadership and taken legal steps to block its official recognition.
The Kibalama faction’s persistence has placed NUP on the defensive, and as an old saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention.” The establishment of PPF appears to be a deliberate move to protect the values of the People Power movement, which some argue have been diluted since NUP was founded in 2021.
Adding to the intrigue, Musa Misango, chairman of the PPF group, hinted that more significant revelations are expected during the People Power Reunion event on November 23rd.
The event will see former and current People Power members come together to discuss the future of Uganda’s opposition. Misango has also hinted that some prominent individuals involved with PPF are yet to be named.
Rumors are swirling around Rubongoya’s role in PPF, especially now that more details are emerging. Previously, some suspected that Hon. Mathias Mpuuga was leading the new group, but he has since denied these claims. With Rubongoya now in the spotlight, questions are being raised about whether NUP’s leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), is aware of these developments or if he risks losing influence over this new direction.
As tensions rise, the coming weeks are expected to reveal whether PPF will serve as a savior for the People Power movement or become a storm that disrupts NUP’s core.
Time will tell if NUP’s leadership can weather this brewing political tempest.
